Capturing What a Selfie Can’t:
Why Professional Family Photography Matters More Than Ever...

A family photoshoot is about so much more than smiles,
It’s about capturing real connection — the laughter, the quiet moments, the love that makes your family uniquely yours. These aren’t just photos for a frame. They’re keepsakes that become more valuable with time. When your children are older, when milestones have passed, and when memories begin to fade, these images will bring it all back.
In today’s world, most of our memories live on phones. But phones get lost, computers crash, and no one really knows where their cloud backups will be in a decade. Printed photos are different — they last. They become a tangible part of your family’s story, tucked away in albums or boxes, ready to be rediscovered by future generations.
Think about the photographs you treasure from your own childhood. Now imagine your kids having something just as meaningful to look back on. A printed photo book, kept on the shelf, becomes a priceless gift — a legacy of love they can hold onto when we’re no longer around to tell the stories ourselves.
Most families go 10 years between professional photo sessions. That’s why we aim to make your experience not only relaxed and enjoyable, but unforgettable — and the results beautifully natural. Let us know what you need to make this the most meaningful shoot for you and your loved ones.
People change. Life changes. And the portraits we take today will become a time capsule of this chapter in your life. One that brings a smile — or even a tear — when you look back.
We hope the photos we create for you are the kind that make friends and family say, “Who took these?” So you can say, “Southern Exposure.” And they can create their own memories too.

Stories to Be Treasured

MEET OUR PHOTOGRAPHER

With over 30 years of experience capturing families, weddings, newborns, and life’s most cherished milestones, Daniel Mann is more than a photographer — he’s a memory-maker. What began at age 16 with a passion for art and fashion photography has grown into a lifelong calling, photographing thousands of families across the Sutherland Shire and beyond.
Daniel’s style is rooted in natural portraiture — relaxed, joyful, and honest. He’s known for his warm presence, gentle humour, and ability to put even the most camera-shy clients at ease (yes, even reluctant teenagers and energetic toddlers!). Whether he’s photographing newborns at home, extended family reunions in the park, or emotional retirement portraits, Dan has a unique gift for making people feel seen — and beautifully remembered.
Clients often say Dan becomes part of the family during a shoot — and many return year after year to update their photos as their families grow. As one client put it, “We need to build another wall to hang them all — so hard to choose, we’re spoiled for choice!”
Based in Cronulla and working across the Sutherland Shire, Daniel brings a personal, professional touch to every shoot — creating timeless images that will live on through generations.

FrequentLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Booking & Scheduling
How can I book a family photoshoot?
Please call us on 0400 832 821 — we’ll be happy to help you find a time that suits you and your family.
How far ahead should we lock in a date?
We’re available for photoshoots seven days a week. Please note that weekends tend to book out quickly, so the more notice you can provide, the better. If your request is urgent or last-minute, we’ll always do our best to accommodate you.
What’s your policy on cancellations or postponements?
All we ask is that you provide at least 72 hours’ notice if you need to reschedule or cancel. This allows us enough time to offer the slot to another client, as our calendar is often fully booked and availability is limited.
What days of the week do you offer sessions?
To make things easier for busy families, we’re open and available for bookings seven days a week.
Location and Style
Do you do both group shots and solo portraits?
All our family sessions include a mix of individual portraits and group combinations — from the kids on their own, to each parent with the kids, and even a couple shot of mum and dad. For larger families or extended groups, we make sure to capture all meaningful pairings and individual portraits as well.
Do you offer both in-home and outdoor photography sessions?
Some of our clients prefer to have their photoshoot at home, often in the backyard where we can find natural backdrops and shaded spots for soft, flattering light. If your home isn’t suitable, we also have a selection of beautiful outdoor locations we can recommend to suit your family’s style.
Are there specific places you prefer to shoot at?
We love shooting at scenic locations like Kamay Bay in the Kurnell National Park and Darook Park in Cronulla. For families located further south, Stanwell Park Beach is another favourite of ours.
Are we able to pick the location for our shoot?
If you have a specific or meaningful location in mind, we’d love to hear about it. Personal locations often make your photos even more special and unique to your family. We’re always happy to accommodate where possible to help make your shoot truly your own.
How would you describe your photography style?
Our goal is to create images that bring a tear to your eye — photos so beautiful and heartfelt that friends and family will ask, “Who took those wonderful shots?” That way, you can proudly recommend Southern Exposure Photography, and they too can experience the joy of a natural, fun, and meaningful photoshoot with us.
Will you guide us on how to pose during the shoot?
Our simple, easy-to-follow guidance ensures you feel relaxed in front of the camera — no modelling experience needed. With over 30 years of experience, we’ve found the perfect balance between natural, candid moments and gently posed group shots that everyone in the family will love.
After the Photoshoot
When can we expect to get our photos?
We aim to have your retouched images ready within 7–10 days of your shoot. Once they’re ready, we’ll get in touch to organise a time to drop by your home and show you the photos — it’s one of our favourite parts of the whole process!
Roughly how many images can we expect?
The number of photos you’ll view depends on the type of shoot you’ve had. We carefully select the best images and retouch them all so you can see and choose your favourites — the ones that make you smile, tear up, or deserve pride of place on your wall as cherished family heirlooms.
Is it possible to get our photos in print or as an album?
We provide high-resolution digital images with no copyright restrictions, so you’re free to print and share them however you like. We know time is precious, so if you’d prefer us to handle the printing, we’re happy to help — in whatever size or format suits your home. Be sure to ask about our full range of options for displaying your precious family photos when it’s time for your viewing.
Will the photos be edited before we receive them?
After your photoshoot, we carefully select the very best images and fully retouch them. You’ll then get to view the final selection and choose your absolute favourites — the ones that will be proudly on display for the next 10 years… until it’s time for your next family photoshoot with Southern Exposure Photography.
What to Wear and Bring
What kind of outfits work best for family photos?
If there’s anything you need — even help deciding what to wear — please don’t hesitate to ask. Daniel and the friendly team at Southern Exposure Photography are here to make the process easy and enjoyable.
Classic outfits like jeans and a white shirt always work beautifully, but if you’d like to try something different, neutral tones like tan and white are timeless and photograph wonderfully. Most importantly, we encourage you to wear something that reflects who you are. There’s no right or wrong — when you feel like yourselves, you’ll look and feel your best in the photos.
Should we pack any extra outfits or props for the session?
You’re very welcome to bring a quick change of shirt — if you’re game for a discreet outfit swap behind a tree! A few changes can offer more variety and give you greater choice when selecting your final images.
If there are any meaningful props that reflect your family — like musical instruments, sporting gear, or anything you’re known for — feel free to bring them along. This photoshoot is all about capturing you and what makes your family unique.
Can we bring our four-legged friend along?
Of course your dog is welcome — they’re family too!
We absolutely love including dogs in our photoshoots. They bring so much personality, warmth, and joy to family portraits. We even have beautiful outdoor locations where dogs are more than welcome to run around and be part of the fun.
And if your beloved pet isn’t a dog? No worries at all — whether it’s a cat, bird, bunny, or something more exotic, we’re more than happy to accommodate any furry (or not-so-furry) family members. Just let us know who’s coming along and we’ll help make it a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone — paws, tails, and all.
Can we reschedule if the weather is unsuitable?
The only weather conditions that will cancel your photoshoot are rain or extremely high winds. Cloudy days actually provide beautiful soft light for portraits, and on sunny days, we’ll find shaded areas to capture flattering, natural skin tones. If we do need to postpone due to weather, we’re always happy to reschedule at no extra cost.
We’d love to include grandparents — is that okay?
Please feel free to bring the whole family — the more, the merrier!
We welcome all generations and extended family members, including cousins, aunties, uncles, and step-relatives. It’s not every day you have a professional photoshoot, so we encourage you to make the most of your session. This is your chance to capture as many meaningful connections as possible — and create memories that will last for years to come.
Kids and Comfort
Do you have any tips if the kids are nervous or don’t want to join in?
No stress — we take a gentle and fun approach, allowing kids to warm up naturally. Some of the best photos happen when they’re just being themselves.
Can we take short breaks during the session if we need to?
Absolutely. We follow the flow of the family and always make time for snacks, nappy changes, or a quick reset if anyone needs a breather.
